Faithful Freddy by Kelvin Bottomley & Baird
A collectors favourite, the good old Faithful Freddy. This one is a very rare one; made by Kelvin Bottomley & Baird these are the early models that were made shortly after they were introduced in 1909. The substantial brass handle on the top of the binnacle is the first give away that this is an early one. As good as they get, all parts complete and original .A rare item these days and very good examples like this one make the same money as a full size wheelhouse Navy compass binnacle. This faithful Freddy has just come back from our professional polishers and is in A1 condition, all original parts. Best one we have ever had went for £2000, a plain one in plain condition is £1000, this one is in the middle.
The Royal Navy's famous submarine bridge compass first introduced in 1909. The design allowed for minimizing deviation and because of this it could be closely corrected, and became affectionately known as "Faithful Freddie" to generations of British Submariners. The compass was made in a compact size to allow it to be passed upward through the conning tower hatch when the submarine operated on the surface, and then back down when she submerged. Comes complete with separate boxes for its compass and it azimuth ring.
