Decorative rope work obviously related to work skills in the age of sail, but craftwork also adapted to the advent of steam as naval artificers produced decorative metalwork as presents for their wives and sweethearts. During the latter part of the 19th century there was also a popular fashion among naval ratings for producing woolwork embroideries of nautical subject and were usually national flag displays or naval ships.
