In 1939, HMS Gipsy was deployed with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla for patrols and contraband control in the Eastern Mediterranean, based at Alexandria. HMS Gipsy and her entire flotilla were transferred to the Western Approaches Command at Plymouth.
