Elkington was one of the most important names in British silverware and a pioneer of the commercial electroplating process during the Victorian period. Unlike conventional silver plate, Elkington pieces were often marked with the company’s own date-code system, allowing many examples to be dated with unusual accuracy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe diamond-shaped date punch on these candlesticks appears to contain the letter “U”, which, if confirmed against the Elkington date sequence, indicates a manufacture date of circa 1859.
