Early 20th Century Whale Vertebrae Mounted Book Slide

The two sections of the whale vertebrae were collected by Harwood Steele as a member of the Canadian Government Sovereignty exhibition in to the High Arctic in 1925, and was entered into his diary on Friday 4th September of that year

This provenance is accredited to family repute. Harwood Steel joined the Canadian Army and served during WW1 rising to the rank of Major. Harwood Steele was the son of Major General Sir Samual Benfield Steele , the 3rd officer sworn into the North West Mounted Police in 1873. After the War Harwood Steele became a journalist and writer of novels & fictional short stories around the mounted police, the characters in which were based on his father and father’s friends

One end of the whale vertebrae is static , whilst the other slides back and forth according to the width required
