Original Royal Navy 8in Gun Tampion – HMS Vanguard 1944
HMS Vanguard was a King George V Class Fast Battleship built during World War 2 and commissioned after the end of the war.
She was the biggest and fastest of the Royal Navy’s battleships, the last battleship to be launched in the world, and the only ship of her class.
Built by John Brown and Company, Clydebank, Scotland in 1941, launched in 1944 and commissioned in 1946

Rev G L Tiarks served as the Chaplain aboard HMS Vanguard during the Royal Tour of Australia & New Zealand in 1948 and was presented with the tampion in 1960 when she was decommissioned. After his Naval career he became the Vicar of Lyme Regis, where he became friends with an ex Royal Navy chap. After the death of Rev Tiarks in 1987 , his son handed the tampion to the friend.
