The earliest surviving written reference to this ancient company occurs in the records of the City of London in 1387 but it was not until 1782 that it was granted its livery. Now considered the principal maritime Livery Company in the City of London and with a membership that spans all maritime professions the Shipwrights' Company has HM King Charles III as both Patron and Permanent Master. An annually elected Prime Warden provides the leadership and represents the Company whilst the Clerk or CEO deals with day-to-day operations and management. Surprisingly, the Company has never enjoyed a home of its own and is presently happily lodged at Ironmongers Hall. Whilst some 'treasures' are able to be displayed in public areas, the majority have been securely stored in subterranean vaults for many years and are rarely seen. To make more effective use of space and resources, the Livery Court has decided to release a few of these possessions for sale, with the proceeds ultimately generating additional funding for its many philanthropic activities. The Prime Warden and Court are grateful to all the original donors for their generosity and understanding.
