A rare AGA Aerial Beacon, manufactured by AGA Signals Ltd., Brentford, England, retaining its original maker’s plaque marked LBAR 200 No. SW 0282. Developed for the British Air Ministry, these acetylene-powered beacons were designed to mark airfields, landing strips and high ground where mains electricity was unavailable. Operating automatically under a time switch, the beacon could function unattended for several months using dissolved acetylene gas, producing a powerful flashing light visible from aircraft up to 35 miles away at 45,000 feet.
Constructed in copper and brass, it represents the innovative engineering for which AGA became renowned during the early to mid-20th century. Beautifully restored and accompanied by a period illustration showing a similar beacon in service, this is an exceptional and seldom-seen piece of aviation and industrial history, offering outstanding display appeal for collectors of aviation, navigation and scientific instruments.
