The Soviet Type 65-76 torpedo emerged in the 1970s as a long-range, heavy antiship weapon developed to counter U.S. carrier groups. Evolving from earlier 650 mm torpedo programs, it was engineered for extended reach, high speed, and a warhead powerful enough to threaten large surface combatants. Its design prioritized endurance and guidance flexibility rather than maneuverability, using wake-homing technology that allowed the torpedo to track the turbulent trail behind a moving ship without relying on active sonar. The large 650 mm diameter enabled greater fuel capacity and a substantial high-explosive payload, while its propulsion system used a high-energy fuel mixture to maintain sustained speeds over long distances. Submarines of the Victor and later classes carried the weapon in limited numbers, emphasizing strategic deterrence. Although upgraded variants appeared over time, the Type 65-76 remained notable primarily for its combination of range, destructive capability, and specialized wake-tracking guidance.
