Ferguson Foundry Patterns - Group 1
An interesting group of original split wooden foundry patterns salvaged from Ferguson Shipbuilders on the River Clyde. Believed to have been used for casting high-pressure steam engine cylinder components or associated fittings, these handcrafted patterns separate lengthways for sand casting. Retaining original identification markings, industrial paintwork and patina, they make fascinating maritime artefacts and decorative displays. These split so that there are in fact six separate pieces.
These original wooden foundry patterns were salvaged by Trinity Marine from the historic pattern workshop of Ferguson Shipbuilders, Port Glasgow, the last remaining commercial shipyard on the River Clyde.
Facing imminent demolition, a company director contacted Trinity Marine to help preserve this remarkable collection. Following an eight-hour journey from Devon, we arrived as demolition was underway, rescuing the patterns by lowering sacks through an opening in the building’s wall to our waiting van.
Originally handcrafted to produce metal castings for ship construction, these fascinating industrial artefacts represent generations of traditional Clyde shipbuilding craftsmanship.
Modern Uses: Today, these wonderfully sculptural pieces make exceptional industrial wall art, restaurant and pub décor, architectural feature walls, framed displays, office installations and film or television props. Their unusual geometric shapes, authentic patina and remarkable provenance make them particularly appealing to interior designers, collectors and anyone seeking genuine British industrial heritage.
