German East Africa Line – Silver-Plated Pedestal Dessert Dish, c.1930s
An elegant silver-plated pedestal dessert dish from the German East Africa Line (Deutsche Ost-Afrika Linie), dating from approximately the 1930s.
Manufactured by the renowned British silversmiths Mappin & Webb, this attractive piece features a shallow circular bowl raised on a short pedestal above a broad saucer-style base. The bowl carries a small shipping company crest.
Founded in Hamburg in 1890, the German East Africa Line operated passenger and cargo services connecting Germany with ports along the African coastline. Its celebrated passenger liners included the Windhuk and Pretoria, both launched in 1936.
A charming survivor from the golden age of ocean travel, recalling the elegance of dining aboard the great passenger steamships of the 1930s. An appealing piece of maritime history, equally suited to display or collection.
