An original Heath & Co. Bell Pattern marine sextant, serial number P498, manufactured in New Eltham, London and certified on 30th October 1959. This precision navigational instrument is supplied in its original fitted hardwood case with the matching factory inspection certificate, telescopes and accessories. The serial number on the sextant matches the certificate, confirming it is an original, complete set. As is common with sextants of this age the index mirror has deteriorated and would need replacing, prior to re-calibration, if to be used for navigation.
The sextant retains its crisp engraved scale, original black-finished frame and an attractive natural patina, reflecting careful use and preservation over more than 65 years. Heath & Co. sextants were renowned for their accuracy and were widely used by the British Merchant Navy and Royal Navy during the final decades of traditional celestial navigation.
A fine example for collectors, maritime enthusiasts, museums or anyone with an interest in nautical history. An increasingly scarce and highly desirable instrument representing the craftsmanship of Britain’s golden age of marine navigation.
