An original Heath & Co. Bell Pattern marine sextant, serial number B759, manufactured at the company’s New Eltham, London works and certified by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, on 18 April 1935. Supplied in its original fitted hardwood case with the matching NPL Class A inspection certificate, this is a fine example of a pre-war British navigational instrument.
The certificate confirms the sextant met the stringent Class A standard, with zero corrections across the entire graduated arc, demonstrating the exceptional precision for which Heath & Co. was renowned. The engraved serial number matches the original certificate, adding to its authenticity and collectability.
The sextant retains its original black-finished Bell frame, silver-engraved arc, telescopes, filters and accessories. It displays an attractive age-related patina while remaining in very good original condition. Dating from the golden age of celestial navigation, this instrument would have been suitable for use aboard Royal Navy and Merchant Navy vessels before the Second World War.
As is common the brush has gone missing over time, no doubt used somewhere else onboard or in the household, mirror and sunshades are excellent. Please study photos.
A highly desirable collector’s piece, this complete and well-preserved sextant is ideal for maritime enthusiasts, museums, or anyone seeking an authentic piece of Britain’s nautical heritage.
