Gun Tompion from HMS Cardiff (D58). A beautiful adornment from one of the five 6 inch guns of a heroic ship that saw extensive action in both World Wars. From the esteemed Ferrers-Walker collection that was once on display at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Dockyard. HMS Cardiff (D58) was a C-class light cruiser, commission 1917. As part of the Ceres sub-class, she served as flagship of the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron during the First World War. Notably, she participated in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917, where she sustained minor damage and casualties. Following the Armistice, HMS Cardiff had the distinction of leading the German High Seas Fleet to internment at the Firth of Forth on 21 November 1918.
In November 1921, HMS Cardiff transported the exiled Emperor Charles I of Austria and Empress Zita to Madeira.In the Second World War, she initially served with the Northern Patrol before being converted into a gunnery training ship in late 1940, a role she maintained until the war’s end. Decommissioned on 3 September 1945, she was sold for scrap on 23 January 1946 and dismantled at Dalmuir, Scotland, from 18 March 1946.

Note : This tompion came from the famous Ferrers Walker collection. Mr Ferrers Walker spent a lifetime collecting the largest and most significant WW1 and WW2 Naval history artefacts. He gave his collection to Portsmouth Naval Museum to exhibit.
