Built at Barrow-in-Furness, she used an American-designed nuclear reactor combined with a British-built hull and systems. During her service, Dreadnought took part in NATO exercises, patrols and trials, demonstrating the advantages of nuclear propulsion. In 1967, she helped pursue the German freighter Essberger Chemist after it broke apart at sea. In 1971, Dreadnought became the first British submarine to surface at the North Pole. She continued operational and training duties throughout the 1970s before being decommissioned in 1980 after seventeen years of service.
