A handsome boat badge from one of the motorboats onboard of the famous Monitor that served in both World Wars. The badge with ships name cast on the reverse was cast in Chatham Dockyard. HMS Erebus (I02) was an Erebus-class monitor of the Royal Navy, launched on 19 June 1916. Designed for coastal bombardment, she featured two 15-inch guns in a single forward turret and was equipped with anti-torpedo bulges for protection.During World War I, Erebus bombarded German positions at Ostend and Zeebrugge. On 28 October 1917, she sustained damage from a German remote-controlled explosive boat, affecting her anti-torpedo bulge. In 1919, she supported British forces during the Russian Civil War in the White and Baltic Seas.
HMS Erebus operated with the Eastern and Mediterranean Fleets, supplying besieged Tobruk and participating in the Allied invasion of Sicily, where she was damaged by enemy fire. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, she provided naval gunfire support at Utah Beach, targeting German batteries at Barfleur and La Pernelle. A premature shell explosion destroyed one of her main guns. Later, she supported operations at Le Havre and Walcheren. Decommissioned in 1946, Erebus was scrapped in 1947. One of her 15-inch guns was reportedly repurposed for HMS Vanguard, the Royal Navy’s last battleship.
