Beautifully cast badge that was once mounted in the wardroom of War Hero HMS Glasgow. HMS Glasgow (C21) was a Southampton-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy, commissioned in September 1937. She initially served with the 2nd Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet, participating in fleet exercises and escorting King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during their 1939 visit to Canada. At the onset of World War II, HMS Glasgow operated in Scandinavian waters, notably evacuating Norway’s King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav, along with the Norwegian Cabinet and gold reserves, during the German invasion. Deployed to the Mediterranean, HMS Glasgow took part in the 1940 Taranto raid against the Italian fleet. She was torpedoed by Italian aircraft in December 1940 but managed to reach Alexandria for repairs.
After refitting in the U.S., HMS Glasgow joined Arctic convoy escorts and participated in Operation Stonewall in December 1943, engaging German destroyers in the Bay of Biscay. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, she provided naval gunfire support at Omaha Beach and later bombarded German positions near Cherbourg, sustaining damage during the operation.Post-war, HMS Glasgow served as flagship in the West Indies and Mediterranean, under Admiral Earl Mountbatten in 1952.
