HMS London (D16) was a County-class guided-missile destroyer launched in 1960 and commissioned in 1963, representing Britain’s move into missile-armed fleet defence. Armed with Sea Slug surface-to-air missiles, she served mainly with the Royal Navy’s Far East and Mediterranean fleets during the Cold War. London undertook patrols, NATO exercises, and diplomatic visits, showing British naval presence worldwide. Modernised in the late 1960s, she remained a capable area-air-defence ship despite rapid technological change. By the 1970s she was increasingly obsolete, and in 1979 HMS London was decommissioned and later scrapped.
