What a ship! A traditional battlecruiser and a beautiful one at that. So rare, from one of Her huge 13.5 Inch main armament guns, an ‘Unofficial Tompion’ in that it was for the pre-1918 Tiger. In 1918 ships insignia were made standard and approved by ‘the Board’, those prior to that often had a great deal of charm, just like this one. From the esteemed Ferrers-Walker collection that was once on display at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Dockyard.
HMS Tiger was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1913 and completed in 1914 just before the outbreak of the First World War. HMS Tiger served with the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet and was involved in several major naval engagements. Her most significant action came during the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1915 and the Battle of Jutland in 1916. At Jutland, Tiger engaged German battlecruisers and sustained multiple hits but remained operational, though her gunnery performance was criticised. Despite the damage, she returned to service and continued operations with the fleet for the remainder of the war. Though not as renowned as some of her contemporaries, HMS Tiger represented a transitional design in battlecruiser development and played a consistent role in the Royal Navy’s wartime operations.
