From the Ferrers-Walker collection, a very rare significant artefact from a very special ship of the Royal Navy, one of the four ceremonial gun tompions from HMS Wakeful, a Dunkirk hero. On the reverse you can see where the badge was mounted to the gun cover and also, unusually, the stamps denoting which gun the crest belonged to, in this case ‘A Gun’.
The "A" gun on the Admiralty V and W-class destroyer HMS Wakeful was the forward-most 4-inch (102 mm) QF Mark V naval gun. It was part of the ship’s primary main battery array. The vessel carried four of these guns, with 'A' and 'B' mounted forward, and 'X' and 'Y' mounted aft.
During World War II, HMS Wakeful participated in the Dunkirk evacuation, rescuing 631 soldiers on May 27, 1940, before being torpedoed by a German E-boat on the return journey. In the gaming space, the ship features as a playable Tier IV destroyer in World of Warships where it transitions between different gun armaments.
Acquired by famous Royal Navy collector Ferrers-Walker and once on loan to the Portsmouth Naval Museum.
