Ferrers-Walker Collection. Handsome huge gun tompion from one of giant 14” guns of the very interesting and historical HMS Canada (1913). A dreadnought battleship, originally built for the Chilean Navy in response to the Chilean-Argentinian arms race.
The HMS Canada was originally built for Chile as Almirante Latorre, but was purchased by the United Kingdom in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I. Commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1915, she joined the Grand Fleet. At the Battle of Jutland, HMS Canada served in the 4th Battle Squadron, firing her main guns at German forces without suffering major damage. After the war, she was returned to Chile in 1920 and resumed service under her original name, remaining active for decades thereafter.
From the Ferrers-Walker Collection, once on display at the NMRN at Portsmouth dockyard.
