Large Hot Water Or Teapot Royal Mail Steam Packet Company
This impressive large silver-plated hot-water or beverage pot was made by the renowned Elkington & Co. for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. Of substantial tapering form, it features a long pouring spout, wooden side handle and fitted domed lid with ventilation holes. The body is prominently engraved with the company’s distinctive crowned crest, identifying it as part of the table or catering service used aboard a Royal Mail liner. The underside carries Elkington & Co. maker’s marks, production stamps and the number 33. Extensive surface wear and scratches provide attractive evidence of its original working life at sea.
Founded in 1839, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company became one of Britain’s great shipping lines, initially carrying mail, passengers and cargo between Britain and the Caribbean. Services later expanded to South America and beyond. By the 1920s, its extensive fleet and shipping interests had created one of the world’s largest maritime groups.
