Built in France, the 33,930-ton MS La Spirit launched in 1983 as Holland America Line's MS Nieuw Amsterdam, pioneering premium Caribbean and Alaskan cruising.

In 2000, she briefly sailed as MS Patriot for United States Lines. Rebranding defined her later years; she became Thomson Spirit (later Marella Spirit) in 2003, spending fifteen highly successful years operating popular European itineraries.

Following a brief charter extension, the veteran cruise ship was retired in late 2018. Renamed Mare S and finally La Spirit for her final journey, she was beached and scrapped in Alang, India, ending a storied 35-year maritime career.
