A Terry Allen designed poster depicting a cartoon man with a telescope. One of seven specially commissioned in 1979, limited edition prints for the refit of the SS Norway when it was sold by French Line to Norwegian Cruise Line. The commissioned artists included, Laura Smith, Stearney, Terry Allen and John Mattos. The illustrations were then mechanically reproduced in four colours and mounted on cardboard. The SS France was a Compagnie Générale Transatlantique CGT, or French Line ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire, France, and put into service in February 1961. SS France was later renamed SS Norway and undertook mostly cruises for Norwegian Cruise Line.
We will ship the posters in their original beech wood frames, but not with the very thin glass unless collected.
One of the other artist John Mattos, in an interview which asked what was the oddest project he had worked on , he said the following ; Signage and Art for Staterooms for the “SS Norway” (Formerly the SS France) Deco Cruise Ship. The odd part is, the ship ran aground in the Indian Ocean in the 2000’s and was sold for scrap in India, One of the stateroom posters recently surfaced at Auction in Manhattan, beautifully framed in the ‘30s style when the ship was built, it was sold as an antique for more than twice my fee for that part of the project.
