Of the most evocative and poignant pieces of marine decor, the iconic navigation beacon. These particular beacons are by Pintsch Bamag of Dinslaken, Germanys answer to British beacon makers Aga & Chance Brothers, and to the Dalen System of efficiently burning gas. In the Suez Canal, orange/yellow lights are often seen on special buoys that supplement the main red/green channels. They don’t mark channel sides like red/green, but instead they highlighted sandbank or obstruction warnings. Having spent over twenty years at sea the paintwork had deteriorated to the point where we chose the best course of action was to highly polish them, and in turn reveal their accidental sculptural beauty.
Fully refurbished, wired with silk flex, (can be wired for USA by request), and now ready for a peaceful life being admired ashore.
The company began in 1843, when Julius Pintsch founded a workshop in Berlin. Pintsch invented “Pintsch gas”, a compressed oil (or oil-derived) gas that burned steadily, which made it well suited for illumination under challenging conditions. Their Involvement in navigation buoys & beacons started as early as 1869 when Pintsch supplied light buoys for the newly opened Suez Canal. They continued to develop lighting for navigation beacons, unmanned lights, etc for 100yrs, these being there last generation of beacons before shifting completely to solar and led.
Their lights and buoys were used globally, e.g. in the Suez Canal, for marine navigation, in beacons in the Thames Estuary.
