Quite simply a masterpiece of British Naval engineering and a Trinity Marine crown jewel, the ultimate binnacle, the ATMC-8, Admiralty Transmitting Magnetic Compass Mk 8.

Cast in the highest possible grade of gun-metal bronze so as to endure decades underwater and when highly polished it looks like solid gold. An incredible piece of Naval equipment that was designed in the 1950’s to replace the ‘Faithful Freddy’, the portable miniature binnacle, as well as being an alternative to the internal projector compass. Once permanently fixed in the fin of a Royal Navy submarine and designed to withstand pressures of a 1000 ft dive. The binnacle is made up of 58 kg of the finest gun-metal bronze and was designed, crafted and tested to 600 lbs/ 272 kg per square inch to house and protect a small conventional liquid-damped magnetic admiralty compass.

We bought six of these from the Royal Navy in the 1990’s and we have not seen another that was not on of this batch since, therefore we can only assume that six of these are known to exist. There would have been a few more made originally but at  58 Kg of bronze I have no doubt that in the 1990’s the rest of them would have been ‘weighed in’ as scrap. Adjustable soft iron spheres are there to compensate for the steel hull of the submarine, keeping the magnetic compass true.
