A George Washington-class fleet ballistic missile submarine, was laid down in November 1958, launched in May 1960, and commissioned in March 1961 . After shakedown and weapons testing, she began deterrent patrols out of Holy Loch, Scotland, including a 65-day deployment during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 .

Overhauled and re-based, she later conducted Pacific patrols from Guam, becoming the first ballistic missile submarine to complete 50 strategic deterrent patrols by 1977 . She completed her final patrol in October 1979 and was decommissioned in February 1981, then scrapped in 1994 .
