USS Cutlass (SS-478), a Tench-class submarine, was commissioned in March 1945. She conducted her first war patrol off the Kurile Islands just after Japan’s surrender, then operated in the Caribbean, South America, and along the U.S. East Coast. Modernized and used in Operation “Rainbow,” she later deployed throughout the Mediterranean, participated in NATO and antisubmarine exercises—including Task Force Alfa—and worked with the Pakistani Navy. Decommissioned in April 1973, she was sold to Taiwan in December 1973 and remains in service as ROCS Hai Shih (SS-791).
