USS Nautilus (SSN-571), commissioned on 30 September 1954, was the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. On 17 January 1955, she became the first vessel to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole during Operation Sunshine. In 1962, she participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade. After decommissioning in 1980, she was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982 and opened as a museum ship at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut, in 1986 .
