USS Newport News (CA-148), a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser, was laid down in November 1945, launched in March 1948, and commissioned in January 1949 . She earned the distinction of being the first fully air-conditioned surface ship and the last active all-gun heavy cruiser in the US Navy . Operating in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Atlantic, she served as a flagship and took part in the Cuban Missile Crisis . During the Vietnam War, she conducted extensive shore bombardment, suffering a fatal turret explosion on October 1 1972, yet continued service until her decommissioning in June 1975, and was scrapped in 1993 .
