USS Orion (AS-18) was a Fulton-class submarine tender commissioned on 30 September 1943. After shakedown off southern California, she sailed to Pearl Harbor, arriving on 28 November 1943. Orion then proceeded to Fremantle, Australia, on 5 January 1944, to support submarines operating in the southwest Pacific. She established Advanced Submarine Base Able at Mios Woendi, Indonesia, on 26 August 1944, servicing 24 submarines and 466 surface vessels before being relieved on 9 December 1944. Orion returned to Hawaii for overhaul and then operated from Saipan between 23 April and 1 September 1945, providing tender and repair services to over 300 ships.
After the war, she was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, operating off the east coast and in the Caribbean Sea. In 1960, she underwent a FRAM II overhaul and conversion to nuclear support. Orion served Submarine Squadron 6 in Norfolk, Virginia, and later Submarine Squadron 4 in Charleston, South Carolina. In June 1980, she deployed to Santo Stefano, Italy, supporting the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean until 1993. Orion was decommissioned on 3 September 1993 and sold for scrap in July 2006 .
