Handsome brass badge cast depicting a submarine rescue.
USS Petrel (ASR-14) was a Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship commissioned on 24 September 1946. After shakedown, she joined Submarine Squadron 2 in New London, Connecticut, where she trained deep-sea divers and salvage crews. In 1950, she assisted in re-floating the grounded battleship USS Missouri off Virginia. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Petrel participated in various operations, including submarine rescues and salvage missions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Notably, in 1966, she recovered a hydrogen bomb lost off the coast of Spain. Petrel was decommissioned on 30 September 1991 and sold for scrap in 2003.
