A Skipjack-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, was laid down in August 1958, launched December 1959, and commissioned in July 1960 under Commander Norman B. Bessac . Home-ported in Norfolk, she conducted NATO exercises, developed nuclear-submarine tactics, and deployed in the Atlantic and Mediterranean . After a truncated 1967 overhaul lacking full SUBSAFE upgrades, Scorpion sailed in February 1968, then disappeared southwest of the Azores on 22 May 1968 with all 99 crew. Wreckage was found at ~10,000 ft in October; her sinking remains unexplained .
