An impressive and very rare vintage brass twin marine tachometer by H. Hughes & Son, London, mounted on its original substantial pedestal. Designed for marine use, the instrument features two independently operating RPM dials, each graduated from 0–45 and marked RPM ×100, allowing engine speeds of up to 4,500 RPM to be indicated. The handsome white dial is enclosed within a heavy polished brass case, with maker’s details beautifully engraved to the bezel.
The engraved script around the bezel suggests this is a late 19th century piece the dial though looks to be replaced more recently than that, possibly due to upgraded engines or because the original dial became worn or damaged.
A bell control is incorporated into the casing, further reflecting its specialist shipboard function. A wonderfully decorative and authentic piece of British maritime engineering, ideal for a nautical collection or interior.
